Die Faszination der griechischen und römischen Mythologie zieht sich wie ein Faden durch die europäische Geschichte und hält bis heute an. Hatte die Antike bereits im Zeitalter der Renaissance eine tragende Rolle, so war sie auch für den Klassizismus des 18. Jahrhunderts prägend, als durch Ausgrabungen und verbesserte Reisemöglichkeiten die antiken Kulturen mit ihren mythologischen Figuren erneut ins Blickfeld der Oberschichten rückten. Die Wiederentdeckung von Pompeij und Herculaneum löste in Europa eine beispiellose Antikenbegeisterung aus, die sich sichtbar in Ambiente und Ausstattung der aristokratischen und großbürgerlichen Lebenswelt niederschlug. Die Nachfrage nach Antiken und antikisierenden Dekorstücken ließ im Kunsthandwerk, Spezialisierungen entstehen, um den Bedarf durch Nachahmungen zu decken. Die Darstellung von Szenen aus der griechischen und römischen Mythologie fanden Einzug in viele Lebensbereiche, auch in die Gestaltung der gusseisernen Kaminplatten.

mythological figures back into the focus of the upper classes. The rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum triggered an unprecedented enthusiasm for antiquities in Europe, which was visibly
reflected in the ambience and furnishings of the aristocratic and upper middle classes. The demand for antiquities and antique decorative pieces gave rise to specialisations in the arts and
crafts in order to meet the demand through imitations. The illustration of scenes from Greek and Roman mythology found its way into many areas of life, including the design of cast-iron
firebacks.

Kaminplatte "Phönix"
ab 1690, lothringische Gießerei Villerupt, 80 x 86 cm
Die Kaminplatte zeigt den Feuervogel Phönix. Dieser stürzt sich von oben in die Flammen und erwächst aus denselben wieder. Im Schriftband oben findet sich die Signierung: FLAMES SONT FLEVRS OV IE REPREN MA VIE (Flammen sind Blumen, aus denen ich mein Leben zurücknehme). Symbol der Ewigkeit und der Wiedergeburt, der Phönix auf seinem Scheiterhaufen erwacht zum Leben, daher sein Motto "FLAMES SONT FLEURS OU JE REPREN MA VIE", sein Hintergrund ist mit Ranken verziert. Die Platte wurde in den berühmten Hochöfen von Villerupt in Meurthe et Moselle, in der Nähe von Longwy, gegossen, die seit 1573 nachgewiesen sind. Der Phönix, das Emblem von Franz I., ziert zusammen mit dem Salamander zahlreiche Kaminplatten in der Region des ehemaligen Herzogtums Luxemburg, wahrscheinlich als Folge der Invasion der Provinz in den 1540er Jahren durch Karl II. Herzog von Orléans, Sohn von Franz I., auf Kosten von Kaiser Karl V.

The fireback depicts the firebird phoenix. It plunges into the flames from above and emerges from them. The inscription at the top reads: FLAMES SONT FLEVRS OV IE
REPREN MA VIE (Flames are flowers from which I take back my life). Symbolising eternity and rebirth, the phoenix on its pyre comes to life, hence its motto ‘FLAMES SONT FLEURS OU JE REPREN MA
VIE’, its background is decorated with tendrils. The plate was cast in the famous blast furnaces of Villerupt in Meurthe et Moselle, near Longwy, which have been documented since 1573. The
phoenix, the emblem of Francis I, together with the salamander, adorns numerous firebacks in the region of the former Duchy of Luxembourg, probably as a result of the invasion of the province in
the 1540s by Charles II, Duke of Orléans, son of Francis I, at the expense of Emperor Charles V.
